I will grant that this arrangement seems slightly more resource intensive than when the computer ran El Capitan (though as stated much less than High Sierra somehow), but I am perfectly satisfied with the smoothness/performance.

MacBook Pro with Retina display (2012 & later) Mac mini (2010 & later) In the case of the MacBook Air, it does not have an HDMI port. Both machines are running MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6 (the current version of High Sierra). Your description sounds exactly like what I used to face on my MBA. My daughters both have MacBook Air - 13 inch 2017 models with i5 processors and 8 GB RAM.

I know downgrading to Mavericks would have security and compatibility risk, as it's no longer supported by apple and a lot of software developers, but since I only use it to browse and do office works, I'm fine with taking that risk if it's faster with longer battery life. However, it was written back before APFS was available.
According to this post Mavericks is the last OS which was able to run smoothly on this machine. However, I'm still facing the same performance and battery issues. I eventually downgraded to High Sierra, thinking Mojave might be to heavy for this MacBook. I found it to be slow and constantly out of RAM, with around 3 hour battery life. It started out with High Sierra when I first got it and I upgraded it to Mojave right away. I've got a 2012 MacBook for my office work.
